Subject: Fishing locations - where do you fish?

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could share some of your favourite squid fishing spots around australia (and NZ). I am pretty keen to have this location info to pass onto newbies.

Cheers,

Glen

Great to find a site dedicated to squidding!

I have been in Sydney a while and would love to find somewhere near to the Eastern Suburbs for squidding - I was hooked on squidding Rottnest Island over a year ago on the very well
lit jetty which gave plenty of fun (and there is another unlit jetty South of the main jetty near some old military setup which was fruitful)

Any more Sydney spots? What about Watsons Bay area?

Cheers Chris

As far as NZ goes, I've had good success at the heads of the Whangaroa Hbr in the Far North.
Have picked up a couple of good size arrows along the rock shelves at the entrance.

Good site :)

hi,

most consistent squid producing area for me has been queenscliffe b/n the pilot jetty and the pier. i also get a few big cuttlefish at mornington, b/n fishermans ramp and mt martha.

im very eager to try the safety beach area that seems to get good raps on this site....

a good informative squid fishing site, well done to all that contribute, especially with reports :)

see you on the water

Sneaked in 2 hours off Safety Beach this morning before the wind turned to a snappy n/west. Tide was falling, water was clear and the squid were not biting. Took some time to land 4 calamari but found out why the squid were shy. The water was fall of couta. One jumped on a squid lure, one took a squid lure and one found my trusty rattler lure. The wind picked up and we went home. Got some tucker and got some bait for the schnapper competition on the first and second of November at Mornington.

Small green lures were all that worked. All other colours and sizes failed to get a hit.

Regards, Wes

I live on the Bellarine Peninsula and fish for Calamati in the area of Portarlington, Indented Heads and St Leonards.
I like to eat the bodies YUUUUM and use the flaps and tenticles as bait for Snapper,Whiting and Flathead

Tried Safety Beach AGAIN on 6 Oct. Very poor result. Most other boats did the same. Seals were around all day as well as couta. Seals were everywhere, and the fishing was bad everywhere.

Water was clear and orange lures worked best. Even flathead fishing was poor. Mind you in the clear shallows, the flathead were fighting off the calamari.

Seals look good to us but obviously not to the fish. Had a great day otherwise, even took off my shirt to get some sun.

Happy squidding
