Message: Found my bag limit just off Safety Beach on thursday before lunch on 25 July in 6 metres. Used a big orange lookalike prawn with prongs on the side and they hit hard. 10 calamari most at half a kilo. Lost quite a few. Tide was rising and water was murky. Yes, it was freezing.

Message: Sorry, Safety Beach next to Mount Martha in Port Phillip in Victoria.
The one with the lousy boat ramp. Looks like this afternoon and tomorrow should be ok to go out. Will advise on the catch when I get back.

Message: I fished at Portsea yesterday at around 11 a.m. Weather conditions almost perfect, but the fishing was quiet -only caught 2 small squids. After this I tried Mornington Pier from 3 to 5 p.m. -another quiet period, but I managed another 7 squids there. The squids were picky, and you had to vary the jig retrieval pattern to entice them to attack.

Message: Got back from a business break and saw how flat the water was at Mt Martha today. Launched at 3pm and struggled to get my bag limit by dark. Calamari were timid over the weeds but preferred a pink lure. They were more aggressive over sand close in to the Mt Martha headland. Still got a good feed.
The Sydney papers said that calamari between 1 to 2 kg were hot around Queenscliff and the Belarine peninsula.
I'll wait till tomorrow to check out the bottom of the bay.

Message: Fished Sunday (18 August) morning off Safety Beach in 7 metres of extremely clear water. Two of us slowly got the bag limit using a large green prawn lure. Orange was mediocre. All other colours were no good.
Saw others near Mt Martha cliff face but they were not so lucky in 4 to 5 meters of water.
Squid went well off the bite after noon.
Chased the lizards and went home with a handsome mixed bag.

Message: Wes
Thanks for your response
I fished for calamari off the Mt Martha cliff face on Saturday and did quite well. Pink lures worked best for me and they seemed to be congregating on the edge of the sand and weed.

Message: Fished Saturday 24 August off Safety Beach in 7 meters of water right in front of the Takeaway shop and nearer the mussel farm. There are large patches of weed with good sandy sections. The spot is good for whiting all year and nice leather jacket during the summer months.
Fished the bottom of the low tide at 8:30am and 2 of us bagged out by 10:30am. Most of the calamari were about 300gm. The water was extremely clear and green small prawn jigs were the only successful color.
Fished closer to Mt Martha but still nearer the mussel farm and hooked into an arrow squid about 1kg. Same luck at the R1 reef while hunting flathead.

Message: Launched at safety Beach for the first time on Tuesday morning (27/8/02). Fished at the yellow buoy for pinkies(got none but did pick up a nice size arrow)
Next fished the cliffs at Mt Martha and picked up 3 decent sized calamari
Wes, I was not aware that you could catch calamari off Safety Beach and the whiting all year round sounds terrific.
