Subject: Why is the squid fishing in SA so good?

Hi all,

I was on a trip to SA a few months back and i was really amazed by the size of squid people were catching. 2-3kg squid were REALLY common at the places i visited. What is so special about this place? Are there very low numbers of commercial squid fisherman in SA?

Dear Glen,

You must have gone to some pretty good places! I haven't seen squid that size caught in SA for a while. I don't know of a lot of commercial fisherman, but I do know the recreational anglers hit squid pretty hard. Numbers and size have certainly decreased since I first caught a squid. I hear they are quite large on Kangaroo Island and over on Eyre Peninsula, but on Yorke Peninsula they are definitely smaller these days.

Incidentally, your location guide for South Australia is a bit sparse. I would recommend pretty well any of the jetties on the eastern side of Yorke Peninsula, such as Ardrossan, Wool Bay (especially! awesome ink stains on the jetty there!) and Edithburg. I haven't fished the Western side much, but I have seen a reasonable number of squid caught at Port Hughes and Wallaroo.

All the best, Gazman.

It is because SA is the best state.
I think you may've been at the Bluff (aka Rosetta Head) in Victor Harbour as they frequently get squid up to 4kg from there. A few weeks ago i managed to get one 3.5kg from Cape Jervis which is about 45mins from Victor Harbour. So, gazman, there are still plenty about and in good sizes!
Cheers!
Nathan

The amount of squid caught in S.A.might be due to the abundance of corkweed beds and patches, along with tapeweed. It seems that the squid lay their eggs in these areas. Some of my favoutite spots on the Yorke Penninsula include:Wool Bay jetty,
Black Point,Point Turton jetty,Port Victotia and probaly the Marion Bay jetty would be the pick of them all. Some of the squid caught on this jetty have to be pulled out of the water with a dab net, they are that big.I lived on Y.P.for 20 years.
cheers
