After many hours on the water, and after seeing a few other kayak fisherfolk catch squid, I've finally caught a squid in NSW from my kayak. But it didn't happen quite the way I thought it would........

Last weekend about 6 kayak fishers from Canberra made a trek to Bateman's Bay to chase snapper and (hopefully) yellowtail kingfish offshore. I managed to catch a small slimy mackeral (see pic), and dreaming of big fish I hooked him through the nose and sent him out on my 10kg outfit as a live bait. I drifted along for about an hour, catching a few fish on soft plastics along the way (see pictures of a few of them, a snapper, an elegant wrasse and a pike). All of a sudden the rod which had the live mackeral on it started to bend like it had a dead weight on the end, then it started pumping - we all know what that means! :thumbsup2:

Since I was unlikely to hook the squid on the single hook I had in the mackeral, I slowly drew the squid to the surface, and removed the mackeral, replacing it with a squid jig. He took a little bit of convincing, but the squid eventually grabbed the jig and I landed him. :) Tasted fantastic on the BBQ that night

good work jazman on getting all of those fish and the squid!

maybe you will get a kingfish next time? did you have a plan on how to land the kingfish if you actually hooked one?

cheers, glen :thumbsup2:

If I hook a kingy, landing it will be the easy bit (either landing net, grab the tail, or lip grips) - keeping it away from the reef after hookup will be the hard part. Some of my fellow kayak fishers caught 2 kingies at 50-55cm long (legal size in NSW is 60cm), and had no problems getting them aboard.

HO HO HO "Landing it will be the EASY BIT " just wait till you hook a few decent sized fish instead of those 1-2yr olds you've been molesting.......90cms and up will tow you around like Captain Ahab on the back of Moby Dick :moped:

Hi Kingyfisher, welcome to the forum. Maybe you should re-read my post, I think you missed the point of what I was saying. :moped:

Landing the fish (once it is beaten and next to the kayak) will be the easy bit - I will net the fish or use lip grips.

The hard bit will be keeping the fish off the reef after I hook it.
