While squidding in Pittwater a couple of years ago I caught a "thing" on my 3.0 jig.

It was a cephalopod of some description, nearer to cuttlefish than to squid. It was approx 4 or 5cms long including the short tentacles, and was less than half the size of the jig it attacked. Colour is dark brown with slightly brighter splotches or bands and it DEFINATELY was not a baby version of the normal cuttlefish we catch all the time. The shape and colour just didnt fit. It was released, but now I wonder what was it? Please identify. Ink? someone?

Could be anything - as you probably know, squid and cuttlefish blend into their surrounds, by changing colour, so it couldve been one of them..........very hard to determine without pictures......Good Luck!!

there is a book available about squid, octopus and cuttlefish of australia (with a title similar to that). it has photos of them all so have a flick through it and you should spot your squidy looking thing!

Hahaha thats a funny lookin squid there aok! Unfortunately it wasnt it. It was definately an exotic cuttlefish of some decription and was just joping someone with expertise like Ink might solve it. Dumpling squis are funny. Does anyone eat them?

HK, dumpling squid don't get big enough to eat, the ones I've seen have a body smaller than a golf ball. If you disturb them they bury in the sand quick as a flash.
They do look very cool, like a calamari compressed lengthways, and the eyes look HUGE compared to the size of the animal.
