That's interesting... where is the best place do you think? Can you get to them from the land ? Perhaps the pier or the "island " that splits up the beach? Any other tips?
Thanks... |

Hey buddy,
I was on the peir - at high tide when the water is almost perfectly clear you can see them prowling around. Work the whole length of the pier and you should be fine. |

Popped down to Balmoral Wharf to throw a squid jig about under the light,
was quiet, very quiet, water was murky, was low tide, about 10pm on Tuesday, probably not ideal conditions. stars were out and was a clear night, no wind. just flicked a small pink jig about with a blue glowstick in front. |

They definately seem to like clear water and high/rising tide. Makes sense as they are sight hunters and go after the small fish that are active on a rising tide.

I've been down at balmoral a few nights over the past week or so and the guys squidding there were not having any sucess.
They were saying, and I agree, that it has been squidded so heavily that the numbers have declined there recently....compared to a couple of years ago anyway. What are your thoughts, has anyone had much sucess there lately? Cheers |

Those waters have just been raped, everything is gone,it's mostly boaters with no brains to try other areas, such a shame !

Some large squid are coming into balmoral during high tide. Looks like the time is again here! Had some bother at work with one of the 'suits' looking to weasel his way out of taking responsibilty for HIS inaction by blaming others.... so I went for a quick squid flick, always a GREAT way to chill out & reeelax Got to Balmoral Baths,no result at first,so I was a bit careless and not expecting much. Using my latest fav jig 'the Tiger',which has been in my collection for a couple of yrs with only the occaisional outing with pretty mixed results. It has really come into it's own the last few weeks on the really large squid(+1kg),anyway I had my reel drag set to allow a bit of pull to take line as I was using a stiffer rod with the 'Tiger' jig. In shallow water prospecting for some smaller baitsize squid near the sharknet, out pops a massive 2kg+ specimen and nails the jig and straight away runs back inside the net. I was a bit slow thumbing the spool and it got thru, entangling the jig and getting off the points when the slack line allowed it off,but my jig was firmly stuck, and I can't find another one Put on a 'Pilchard' jig and scored one about 1.5kg ,then on the next cast I snagged that too.....and I havn't lost a jig in the last 2 dozen trips. Oh well ,I had a great time anyway and forgot all about work and slept like a baby, any time I catch a suid or two especially a big one I'm HAPPY -------------------- K F

Checked Balmoral baths out on 21st May.Water v clear lots of fish on the chew ,got a 30cm bream(porgy),and 42cm Trevally (jack). Just before a cold front came through the fish & squid were very hungry.Even had a good size S.Calamari chase a bread bait soaked with tuna oil,but he had gone by the time I put out a real jig !
