Spain Squid Fishing Options

Hi everone, I just had an interesting conversation with Fionn at a UK website and was told that squid fishing is a national obsession in spain! so i thought to myself we really need a thread about squid fishing in spain at squidfish.net

I would be interested to hear from any spaniards as to which spots are good for squid fishing in spain.

Fionn explained that -

...squid fishing was particulalrly popular on warm, balmy summer nights in the local ports.

The general rule (in Spain) is to go for squid at night, on a rising tide, with the prospective area well flood-lit.

Cuttlefish can be caught during the day, in the right conditions, & even at low tide. they tend to be on or near the bottom, over sandy areas with 'poseidon grass'.

Squid of course will attack near the surface, at mid-waters & near the bottom, and generally at night, but I've caught good specimens late afternoon. I love that sensation when you see two or three squid 'dancing' behind your lure, pure adrenalin!! the preference (in Spain) is for bright red or orange yo-zuri lures.

We also use a small phosphorescent tube about 50cms from the lure, this helps vision wise, rather than attracting the beast itself.

I use a triple swivel (?), tie the reel line to one end, tie about 30cms of 0.25mm line to the other end, on the end of this I loosely crimp a small shot, this has the effect of bringing the lure down to the required depth, with the shot bouncing along the sea-bed instead of the lure, thereby avoiding unwanted snags. oh', and the lure is clipped onto the other part of the swivel. seems so much easier to draw these things!! hope this helps.
