Catching Squid In Winter, SA - ass - 28-06-2008

Are squid caught in winter around SA or mainly summer ? My contacts in Pt Lincoln tell me that they have better catches in winter and yet other info suggests summer is better in some places.

I find its mostly weather dependant therefore summer is usually better but if ya get a nice still day in winter go for it they are everywhere!

Can only talk about my area in Port Phillip Bay...but winter is the time!

Clear and still water....

Remember there will always be days wehn the fishing is quiet....thats ok...in fact it better than staying at home and doing the housework.

Hey Blue,

Have you had luck lately in Port Phillip Bay? I've dipped my line in the water at Rye/Portsea without avail. I might start luring for Salmon.

Do you go when it is dead calm water? or it doesnt affect your squiding if its a bit choppy?

i prefer the dead calm glassy days...but they can be caught in bit of chop too...

Years ago we used to catch huge squid on the Rapid bay jetty around end of august / early sept when it was real rough - 20 to 30 knots !!! As long as the water was clear the squid bit well and they were big ones too !!
