Fishing for shy squid - beakman - 21-02-2004
I tried a spot of squiding at port hacking,saw heaps of squid swimming around but could not get them to bite,had them right under me although placing the jig right ontop of them they were too scared to come near...Very fustrating.Tried jigging and slow retrieve but no takers.Dont know why but I'll have to keep trying,wish me luck

this can be really frustrating. try smaller jigs or maybe a baited jig to see if they work better.

The reason why you wernt catching any squid is simple, they just wernt hungry and no jig lure or bait will entice them.
I have had this happen to me on numerous occaissions and it can be fustrating to say the least.
BUT I have expirienced times when the squid were about but couldnt hook one till I started to cast along the peir instaed of straight out and then retrieved the jig very quickly and hooked up every time, sometimes they go for color, sometimes they go for the chase, sometimes their just not hungry and nothing you will do will make them bite.

I saw a guy catching them down the south coast, and it looked easy so thought I'd give it a go. I tried today in botany bay and with my 5 year old son had a ball watching the jig go along and the squid come up to it, but exactly that they would just come up and look at it then swim away. The jig was about 3 inches long and pink.

Mates its not you. Squid are just in that mood sometimes, where you can do nothing right no matter what you try and how good you are. This unpredictability is what makes it interesting.
The same tactic you used would have worked on any other day. Keep at it, youre assured one soon.

hey gav,I had the same problem and was told to use smaller jigs or try giving them some quicker action.I've yet to try it so I cant give you any results as yet.Keep trying

I am going to go again tomorrow and was about to buy a different colour jig, as someone was saying that the jig was to represent a prawn and if there was no prawns around its not going to go the jig, so change it to a blue or grey to be more like bait fish.
Is it worth changing the colour or just do the same thing at the same time and see what happens?

Yeah it is worth having a second colour and size.
Get a pink one and a green or blue one, one in medium and one in small size and thats all you need.

Well, was going to say exactly that - try a different colour, or a smaller size.....another option could be to get a teaser into the water - sometimes they will attack that, then they willl go for the jag once they drop the teaser - another option could be to dip your jag in prawn oil, or a fish oil of some kind.......

Colour wise, I tried this setup yesterday afternoon from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. Under a float attached 3 identical jigs with different colours, a green, a red and a blue. In 3 hours I caught 6 big squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Something else, was the green jig on the bottom of the setup? Maybe positioning of the jigs could have had something to do with it?

Ah, it all becomes so clear to me, all the ###### that floats past you in the bay, I must of took the weird guy in the scuba outfit holding big bag full of squid as debris from the ports. Now I know.
By the way, what colour jig attracts scuba divers, I'm sure someone out there must know.
