Fishing for shy squid - beakman - 21-02-2004 I tried a spot of squiding at port hacking, saw heaps of squid swimming around but could not get them to bite, had them right under me although placing the jig right ontop of them they were too scared to come near...Very fustrating.Tried jigging and slow retrieve but no takers.Dont know why but I'll have to keep trying, wish me luck Beakman <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ![]() Fishing for shy squid - glen - 22-02-2004 hi beakman, this can be really frustrating. try smaller jigs or maybe a baited jig to see if they work better. best of luck, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ![]() Fishing for shy squid - supersquid - 22-02-2004 hi beakman The reason why you wernt catching any squid is simple, they just wernt hungry and no jig lure or bait will entice them. I have had this happen to me on numerous occaissions and it can be fustrating to say the least. BUT I have expirienced times when the squid were about but couldnt hook one till I started to cast along the peir instaed of straight out and then retrieved the jig very quickly and hooked up every time, sometimes they go for color, sometimes they go for the chase, sometimes their just not hungry and nothing you will do will make them bite. Fishing for shy squid - beakman - 23-02-2004 Gday supersquid,How fast is fast when you say you caught them on a quick retrieve,I always thought it had to be slow, but I'll try a bit of speed next time.thanks Beakman Fishing for shy squid - Guest - 18-05-2004 I saw a guy catching them down the south coast, and it looked easy so thought I'd give it a go. I tried today in botany bay and with my 5 year old son had a ball watching the jig go along and the squid come up to it, but exactly that they would just come up and look at it then swim away. The jig was about 3 inches long and pink. cheers gav Fishing for shy squid - Hunter_Killer - 18-05-2004 Mates its not you. Squid are just in that mood sometimes, where you can do nothing right no matter what you try and how good you are. This unpredictability is what makes it interesting. The same tactic you used would have worked on any other day. Keep at it, youre assured one soon. Fishing for shy squid - beakman - 19-05-2004 hey gav,I had the same problem and was told to use smaller jigs or try giving them some quicker action.I've yet to try it so I cant give you any results as yet.Keep trying Beakman Fishing for shy squid - Guest - 19-05-2004 [quote name='Hunter_Killer' date='May 18 2004, 09:15 PM']Mates its not you. Is it worth changing the colour or just do the same thing at the same time and see what happens? cheers gav Fishing for shy squid - Hunter_Killer - 19-05-2004 Yeah it is worth having a second colour and size. Get a pink one and a green or blue one, one in medium and one in small size and thats all you need. Fishing for shy squid - Mr_Willy - 21-05-2004 Well, was going to say exactly that - try a different colour, or a smaller size.....another option could be to get a teaser into the water - sometimes they will attack that, then they willl go for the jag once they drop the teaser - another option could be to dip your jag in prawn oil, or a fish oil of some kind....... Fishing for shy squid - squidjigdotcom - 21-05-2004 Maybe you should try a Squid-Fly!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> Fishing for shy squid - crazychef - 22-05-2004 i with you jon!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> Fishing for shy squid - TTL - 26-05-2004 Colour wise, I tried this setup yesterday afternoon from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. Under a float attached 3 identical jigs with different colours, a green, a red and a blue. In 3 hours I caught 6 big squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ![]() Fishing for shy squid - Jazman - 26-05-2004 I like green too, best all round colour. You are game to rig 3 jigs on one rod, what if you got snagged!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> Something else, was the green jig on the bottom of the setup? Maybe positioning of the jigs could have had something to do with it? Jaz Fishing for shy squid - Guest - 26-05-2004 Come on guys, I think this is big conspiricy. I started this question over a week ago and have been trying since with all the advice given and not a thing. H E L P! Better still theres a case of beer in it for anyone who can show me and my boy, if anyone lives around the botany bay area. Cheers Gav Fishing for shy squid - glen - 26-05-2004 this is a conspiracy free website..... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> Fishing for shy squid - Hunter_Killer - 26-05-2004 Gaven, little do yo know glen stalks you in scuba gear whenever you fish and he plucks every squid that attacks from your jig and takes it home ! Fishing for shy squid - Gav - 27-05-2004 Ah, it all becomes so clear to me, all the ###### that floats past you in the bay, I must of took the weird guy in the scuba outfit holding big bag full of squid as debris from the ports. Now I know. By the way, what colour jig attracts scuba divers, I'm sure someone out there must know. Gav Fishing for shy squid - glen - 27-05-2004 you guys just keep getting snagged on the bottom with your jigs so i have something to collect! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> p.s. scuba divers get attracted to expensive looking jigs. doesn't matter what colour. Fishing for shy squid - Mr_Willy - 27-05-2004 Thats the old saying - gotta attract the fisherman before the fish. As for this - im glad glen is a long way away from me then - i have trouble catching them as it is!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ![]() As case of beer - thats almost worth the trip to Botany!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> |
