Drop Net Rules?
#1
Gday all.

I have a query on drop nets so I thought I'd throw it to the Squidfish community and try to get the low down.

I use a drop net, a hoop style net on a rope, that you drop over the side of a pier or other high place to get to the water to claim your catch. I am quite sure that it is legal to use these type of nets in this way in Victoria.

But, when at Flinders on Monday (ANZAC public holiday), I saw 2 guys using this type of net with bait in the bottom to catch fish. Over about an hour, while I watched these guys would drop the net, let it sit for 10 mins or so and then haul it up as quick as they could. Often with fish in the net. Leather jackets, grass whiting etc. One of the guys asked me what my problem was when he saw me watching him, which led me to think perhaps this way of fishing is not legal in VIC. I was just curious as these two guys were landing 10 to 1 over anyone else. Looked like a quick way to get a decent catch. But it also looked a bit suss.

So, does any body know the rules when it comes to drop nets and what you can use them for?

Thanks in advance,

nala
