Hi All!
Just watched an aventure bound vid on you tube about garfish netting whilst walking on the shore with a light. Looks awsome fun <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' /> . Anyone know if any spot around port phillip bay or westernport where one could go netting for garfish?

A dip net is OK but any other type of net is probably illegal for recreational fishers....given the number of nets that would be used.

As i remember, Glen (forums admin) cleaned up on gar with a landing net whilst we were out Floundering a few years back. That was walking in the water though, with a floundering light in one hand. You see heaps of gar whist out floundering, and scooping them off the surface with a landing net is much easier than spearing them.

Thanks Steeny! I've been to flinders pier a couple of times in the morning and it all looked very calm in the water but it's probably a different story at night. I was thinking of just using a landing net, with a square frame, it seemed to work well for the guy on the vid.

Yeah garfish are pretty easy to scoop up with a prawn net or some other hand-held net.
Steeny, I still have not managed to go floundering since we talked about it last! I built my float and now it is filling up with leaves in the backyard! lol Maybe the end of daylight savings will get me going!

I now live 2000 km away from my float, so i don't think i'll be using it any time soon.. got my spear and waders though, so i need to find out if theres any flounder in Brisbane anywhere

Yeah there probably is fish to spear but make sure there aren't too many sharks!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> They might creep up on you in the dark! Eeeek!

Can you point me towards a direction when buying a light that can go underwater. Is that called a prawn light. I've actually been reading your flounder topics... extremely fascinating... i think i might might be diversifying my fishing obssession which is soo awesome! Sorry, i found all the equipment stuff in the floundering threads. I'm gathering it's pretty much the same but without the spear.
Glen is there a fairly sheltered spot around mornington or franskton... every time i drive past the lookout at frankston the water always look calmer than say chelsea or carrum beach.

Went to bcf mornington, all they had for a submersable light was a torpedo. Have you heard of it? Ito doesn't come with a pole just a cord with a plug.. hmm.. maybe i 'll keep looking.

I got a prawning light, from aussie disposal...i'm hoping it will work ok. it was really cheap, now i just gotta get waders, a net that will hold garfish and a battery and a float... got a while to go <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' />
I can't wait to get all my equipment together... i'm saving for a pair of waders next! I found waders that only cover your legs, is it better to buy the ones that go to your chest? How deep should i wade?

chest waders are best, even if you only wade to your knees. you never know when you will step in deep water by accident. or if you see a fish and need to follow it out to deeper water <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

get chest waders. you'll be amazed how deep you end up when you are chasing big gars on the surface.
also well worth putting some clips on your float to hold your light while you get stuff out of the net. the lights need to be kept submerged at all times. I used pool cue type holders so i could clip the light in and out.
grab yourself a spear too. may as well pick up a feed of flounder as well as gar. sometimes the odd flathead or mullet too.

Thanks Steeny, didn't think of what to do with the light if i was busy.
Still slowly building my equiptment. Hey can i ask, if your car battery falls in the water do you get fried? Seriously will I?
My brother doesn't think it's a good idea i go traipsing around in the water coz i can't swim.... sigh, another thing to put on my to do list.

I cant imagine you getting zapped if you battery goes in the water. You will be left in complete darkenss though.
You shouldn't have any trouble if you cant swim. theres no great current in the bay to sweep you out, and if you worried, only go knee or thigh deep. it gets cold quick when you go balls deep anyway. Just make sure your waders have quick release straps. if you do go down, you need to get em off quick. once they are full of water, your in more trouble than you know.
I've had some great times wandering around in the water by myself at night, you just need to be a little careful about how you do it.

Thanks Steeny... quick release straps, yet another thing i havent thought of yet. I feel a bit better knowing i'm not going to fry myself and knee deep sounds good, till i get more confidence. Thanks for all the responses they really really help. there's bugger all flounder to be had round here in brisbane but there's plenty of prawns and squid plus some pretty good fishing to be had on the bay..snapper , jew , tailor , bream , flathead , whiting , mackeral and other fish as well so there's no shortage of things to chase round here.
