Help Making Tackle And Pest Fish!

Hi im new to this site so please bear with me if this has already been posted.

Im out in the seychelles and have started squid fishing. I fish from the from the rocks and I'm catching what in japanese is called aori-ika. Anyway the issue im having is that out here there is very little in terms of fishing tackle and am down to my last jig (there are no fishing tackle shops and only thing you can buy is hooks and line from general stores) Anyway Im looking to make my own jigs but need some help. Im was planning on going down the baited jig method but there is a problem. Out here the waters are teeming with toothy critters with the biggest offenders being schools of long tom or needlefish. What can i do? im sure the bait will get eaten before the squid get to it.

welcome to the forum. you can buy squid jigs off ebay so i would recommend trying that. but also making your own jigs would be a good hobby. i am surprised more people are not trying to make their own squid jigs!!!



as for the long toms eating or attacking the baited jags, i agree that might be a problem. however as i understand it those fish tend to hang around on the surface so maybe if you set the baited jag deep enough (under your float) they would leave them alone. just an idea.

Thanks glen. I actually decided to go don the snorkel and flipper and lo and behold I came up with a total of 8 jigs. Looks i havent been the only person squid fishing! Unfortunatley most of them are very rusty.

Im going to try and increase the distance from the jig to the float. Just have to hope that the trevally dont eat them though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

One quick question is whether or not the hooks for making a jag need to barbless. Ive come a across some small sabiki hooks that i thought might work but they all have barbs and are offset.

using ebay here is abit hard as getting anything shipped out here is expensive and trying to find a seller who would be willing to ship to africa is another task in its self, so thats why im quite keen to make my jigs. Thanks again for the the reply though it is appreciated.

You can always flatten the barbs using pliers.



Or alternatively, you could just leave the barbs intact and maybe you will also catch some of the fish that are pecking at the baited jig!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

for a homemade sabaki you could tie on the lines,hooks and all that junnk and most stores sell glow in the dark or colorfull beads you could thread onto the lines that come off the main line which tie to the hook buy some of that shiny thread tie it on the eye of the hook and buy some 5 gum(its a brand)(shiny foil) the wrappers are shiny and rip the wrappers in half and fold em to the size you want for you sabaki if (its good if they are hard to stick through the hook, stick it through then ive caught lots of perch with shrimp on the hook but you are trying to catch shrimp <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> here at Santa Cruz CA, US you get small red octopus like every 10 seconds on every hook of a storebought sabaki it sometimes even works with no bait on
