Hey guys, awesome resource for squidding info, so thanks!

Just moved from Sydney to Wello and would like to know if anyone has actively targeted squid from the shore here? Had a few drives around and there are plenty of kelpy areas but I'm not sure if it's the right habitat for them here? Any info would be appreciated as i'm going of to sus it out this afternoon and will report back anyway.

First post BTW <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Thanks

Peter

hi peter! i have been trying to get info about squid fishing in NZ for a long time and have not had any luck.

Your quickest option might be to give the lads at Fish and Game a call and see if they can help you out.

Or otherwise perhaps you could try and contact someone like Steve O'Shea (i believe his email is steve [at] tonmo [dot] com ). He is a squid researcher based in NZ. I think he might focus on giant squid but he should know something about the little cousins!!!

Glen your a champ, thanks.

Well the wind was so bad yesterday I didn't even throw out a jig, but I managed a few little fish.

I'm here for at least a year so i'll compile a log of the squidding that I get up to.

First squid spotted on the weekend (10/11)

They looked just like the southern calamari that you get in Sydney. About 20-25cm mantle.

I was casting a worm gulp (SP) close to some weedy shallow stuff and they were hitting that.

Put a jig on with no juck - i think i took too long to get out. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I will try again.....

Yeah the water has been mostly a cloudy blue colour when i've been out Glen. There are a few rivers that empty into the harbour that keep it silty, although there are periods that are very clear according to locals.

What sort of water do squid prefer?
