A rare crested bandfish has been found for only the third time in Tasmania, in the shallows off Bruny Island.

The ocean fish is famous for protecting itself against predators by releasing a dark, ink-like fluid.

The fish, usually found in warmer waters, has a distinctive head with a tall crest, and the latest specimen is just over one metre long.

Alistair Graham from the CSIRO says it is a significant find that will help improve their knowledge of the species…

Hey that is really interesting. What a weird looking fish <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' />

I read the article in the link you posted Glen - only the third ever found in Tassie. I had to laugh, the fish secretes a dark inky substance as a defence, which comes out of its anus <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />
