That was a nicely done squid fishing page for Malta. I noticed some of those squid jigs in the pictures look very familiar. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hi Kylaid.

Cirkewwa was never my favourite location. However at this time it is a little late to fish from the shore. Try St. Paul's Bay, you might get luckier there.

Hi Leonard,

Came across the squid fish forum whilst researching for a new forum we are starting, maltafishingforum.com in an effort to raise awareness levels on fishing in Malta but most importantly to give Maltese amateur fisherman a forum portal to congregate to.

My particular focus is big game offshore fishing, Blue fin Tuna from a boat, 20-50 miles out from the coastline, something not really practised much in Malta on rods and reels! Just commercial fisherman with long lines.

One of the things we were trying to do it catch squid as bait! but we didn't have any luck last year and from what I read here on this forum, probably because it was the summer months. Have some squid jigs bought locally, we tried shining a spot lamp into the water to start the feeding cycle, but we didn't really manage!

Aside from Tuna we want to explore night time drift fishing for Sailfish, Swordfish etc, and to that effect we have purchased a swordlight, 4.5 foot very expensive neon tube as my buddy described it! It's a submersible green light used to attract bait fish and even big game, and I would guess squid as well.

I certainly would be interested in learning more.

Regards,

Nick

Hi Nick,

some serious Albacore you have there! I'll help you with squid, but you'll have to help me with Albacore!

Summer Time is not the best time for squid, however I must admit, I never really tried then either. The best time is between September and February. Are you looking for live squid to fish with? Because that might be rather difficult in summer.

I'm not sure how much the light really does help because most of the squid we catch are in 20 - 40 metres deep. We stick to old tradition and we still use a strong light reflecting on the water, at least it helps to luminate the lures. You do occasionally get a few squid playing around on the surface too. I'd like to try deeper sites on the west coast this summer however. I see squid in Marsaxlokk in Summer so they are there, you just need to find them!

Anyway, let me know how I can help!

regards,

Leonard

Hi Leonard,

Hopefully this year we will have even more Albacore hooked up as last year when we had gone out we only had the one rod and we were at the end of the season. These year we can drop a spread of 6 rods, 4 in our new permanent rod holders on the rear gunwale and 2 on almost horizontally mounted holders to give a sort of mini outrigger spread.

Albacore are fun to catch and being much closer to land no so expensive to go trolling for, as opposed to Bluefin Tuna where we have to go 20-30 miles offshore! If you don't have access to a boat we'd be happy to take you along with us, basically as part of our efforts to raise awareness and give people a go at new styles of fishing, we started doing a cost sharing exercise. As you know the cost of fuel is high in Malta and this season will be around 50cents per litre! so we usually estimate how much fuel we'll be using for the day and split that between the number of us going on the boat to fish.

Alternatively we're also trying to encourage people to meet on organised trips, contrary to typical beliefs we've come across here, going out in a pack increases your catch rate. The more lures in the water, the greater the chance of attracting and keeping fish in the area. If you come across Albacore or Bluefin, there are plenty to go around!!

Live squid would be nice but then again I don't have a live bait well! I've read squid are not easy to keep alive so I'm guessing its unlikely we'll manage with that. But effectively would be nice to catch squid, freeze them and then use them as bait. Tuna, Swordfish etc love em!

We're also rigged up with Chem lights, and LP Electralumes which can be dropped down several hundred feet on the rig so you can illuminate just above the jig. As for the deeper sites on the West coast, we're certainly up for those, happy to drift at night so no worries there <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Drop me a PM if you're interested, and hope to see you on the forum at MFF as well.

Regards,

Nick

[quote name='Kaptan' post='3828' date='Dec 11 2004, 01:45 AM']Here's one photo of Maltese squid or klamari.

Cirkewwa near ferry between the islands is a good spot to get them. Biggest I got neared 1KG.

Good luck for the season. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I'm thinking that October starts the best fishing in Malta. Most of my distributors are stocking up during August and September for Malta area.
