I'm glad about your report, I went 2 days ago to one of my spots and got nothing... a first! I was worried because with all this wind it must have been a month since the last time I got to the water, and I have no idea if squid is seasonal around here.
Tide seem to be a critical factor around Auckland... so than the wind and water visibility.
I shake my jig on the water if cover in crap, but most of the times I cast back to the pair with a good success rate, so I'm not sure if is necessary. Some people carry a tooth brush if you are keen to try.

Hi Cuan,
In my experience you dont need to clean your squid lure after catching a squid. The lure may look pretty dirty after a squid had just emptied its ink sack all over it, but just cast it out again and keep using it; most of the ink would have been washed away. You still most likely would get ink stains left on your jig, but once again in my experience this doesn't effect the jig in any way, so it would be fine.
One thing i do sometimes is let my jigs ive used sit in a tub of fresh water, to wash the salt off (not really necessary) but also to see if any of the jigs are damaged, if they aren't floating as they should. No point using a dud.

These two days with strong NE wind, stopped people from all kind of fishing in Auckland.

Hi, Had gone squid fishing many times since my last post, but had got nothing..
Yesterday night I caught 3 squids in 2 hours.
I fished at the Takapuna boat ramp.
Tonight I went fishing squids. The wind direction had changed, I got nothing.
A Korean got one squid before I left.
Still slow...

thanks for the report peter! i am getting the impression that not many people in new zealand are going for squid. we only have had about 3 topics in 5 years of having a squid forum!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
i would have thought the squid fishing would have been really good. I know its great for other species in NZ.

Last family trip we did to N.Z we stayed at the campervan park beside the Takapuna ramp the day we arrived and the night before leaving.
went for a walk over to the ramp after dinner and there was a heep of people fishing for squid there as they do get them there in numbers at times.
also saw plenty of snapper coming in in boats too.
