Me again,...



I had a go at catching calamari at the southern part of Cleeland Bight near the old quarry pylons. Only got 2 ~20cm hoods <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hey AK great catch mate, that couta on the left is a beast, he would've given you some curry. You love those barber perch don't you! Are they any good on the plate?

Yeah I will try one if I catch one, my mate's Dad who takes us cray diving off Woolamai catches heaps and throws 'em all back while we're underwater - from now on he'll be under strict instructions!

How do you treat your rock cod and couta? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm interested in how other people cook their catch....invariably I fry up what I catch, but I'm keen to learn some new (and less fatty) methods.

Gday Jaz,



Couta:

We either fillet, lightly batter and pan fry or we cut it into 10cm lengths and bake in the over with a tomatoe based sauce containing olive oil/herbs/tomatoe/diced onion, with a few potatoes thrown in as well.



Rock Cod:

Makes nice fish soup, even nicer if you have a few other different fish in there as well, like a flathead/gurnard.



I take my hat off to you for showing interest in alternative ways to cooking fish <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />



Alot of fish species that people throw back beacuse they are "s$%^ eating" is because they dont lend themselves to the fillet and batter technique <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I will definately try the baked recipe, sounds delicious.



I agree with you about people throwing back fish that dont lend themselves to the fillet and batter technique, those wrasse/parrotfish/rockies (call them what you will!) are not great eating when filleted and fried, but mince the flesh and add a few herbs, some beaten egg, and some Thai green curry paste and they make fantastic fish rissoles. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

aok its not a bad spot hey? never caught a couta there wat bait were ya using? i've speared off there and theres alot of wrasse n whiting both grass n sand. off the rocks directly behind the old pylons we get rock cod luderick..



how far out were ya?

Those rock cod look similar to ours and i would never eat the things......

Also i think they are snook, not couta - well they look loke our snook anyway!!
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!

Jazz: If its a blue throat wrasse, it lends itself to fillet/batter, very nicely <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />



RX3-BOi: We caught the clamari near those old pylons. the couta was caught a little further north near the last red channel marker, on pipi! the other couta was caught on a gar at a spot about 1km south of cape woolami in 35m of water.



Mr willy: Definately couta mate <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> photo is a bit dark... how have you tried cooking the rock cod?

Yeah, just had another look, do look a lot like couta now i think about it!!

And ive tried cooking rock cod once - on kangaroo island - NEVER AGAIN!!

all those photos are great, and the fishing ideas sound delicious.

and also, blue throat wrasse commonly called parrotfish, is one my favourites to eat and ill have to try ur recipe.
