haargh Mateys.
I was on the Rye pier last Tuesday and I saw about 6 fat garfish caught on silverfish, it was slow going because it was about 3pm.
I also saw about 4 little squid (would fit on your hand) caught off the pier on 10 cm artificial jigs at dusk within 20 mins by three different people. The jigs were in golden brown and yellow (looked like Hayabusa brand).
Fresh air, tight lines, scales, slime and fins, 'tis the salty sea dog life for me. Arrrgh!

hi mikii,
i have not heard any reports lately. probably your jig is a good one but if there are no squid around then it still won't work. best you can do is change tactics and maybe try for fish instead of squid! there should be a few fish hanging around the pier pylons i am guessing. or maybe on the way back give the blairgowrie pier a shot. it can be good at times and is quite a nice spot though a little tricky to find....will need the melways!!!

Ha haargh mateys.
While at Rye, I had a look at the Blairgowrie pier too. It was 2am and the tide was rising, very flat. I saw three friendly young people catch three little squid (about hand size) from the pier near the end below the light just behind the old replica ship. Then a seal showed up and put a stop to that.
To find Blairgowrie pier, just keep going down the Nepean Highway until you see St John's Wood road on the left. The turn off to the Blairgowrie yacht squadron is just a few hundred metres after that on the right and has free parking.

Went to Portsea pier yesterday (sat 17) and left today 4pm. Caught nothing yesterday but got one today around 1-2pm just after low tide.

Also saw a HUGE cuttle fish swimming close to the surface i quickly put my Yo-ZUri in front of it's face: nothing. Also jigged it a little to see if any results would of happened; nothing. It swam away. After a few hours what i see a random old guy caught my cuttle fish. same one as well. how frustrating.

Artificial. I was using pink yo-zuri, he had dark navy blue or black "couldn't really see".

Caught this on Tuesday night and another about the same size a few days prior. Both were caught with baited jigs under a float, conventional squid jigs don't seem to do too well

Went to portsea pier last night (sat) with a mate. Weather report predicted 15-20 knot winds. Wrong, 25-30 knot winds... braved it, northerly winds so good for casting into the pier L section, but rough waves and they were breaking over the pier at times, but you gotta have a flick if tyou are there. 2 hours, no squid.
Went back in the morn on day break, much more civilized weather, still blowing 15 knots but calmer seas. Got one calamari 25cm hood on a gold and brown 2.5 yozuri. Only one old mate on the pier with us, he got zip that we saw.
Thought I'd post a report just to keep the info out there.
Can anyone tell me when the peak season is, when the squid are most prevelant?

Hi All
Went calamari fishing on Saturday and Sunday morning at Portsea Pier, fishing the change of tide in early morning. Caught bag limit of medium sized calamari on Saturday and 8 on sunday.
Dark Brown/Black jigs worked a treat.

Thanks for the report Glen but Tackleworld's reports on Squidding always sound like a sales pitch to me. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> But I am not a fan of Portsea to be honest.

Yep them Harimitsu jigs are nice, well made and expensive. I recently got out squidded about 8-3 by a mate using a $3 razor back when I was all tricked up with my yami's and yozi's... When they are there they will stirke when they are not they wont. A good jig might make some small difference but that is all. I went to Portsea last sat night. I fished on the side of the pier where the boats come in near the pub. I got 3 squid of a good size and caught 3 very good size cuttle fish. I used the 2.5 artificial jigs that are pink. The cuttlefish to catch is like doing weights in a gym boy they are heavy.

Nah i couldnt. But some more expreience fishermen told me that cuttlefish come back again if they fall off ya jig. So that how i knew i had caught them and plus when i lifted them out of the water they spat water out.
