Gday fellas
Went out for a look off Chelsea for 1.5 hours last night, gorgeous conditions, got 1 flounder and 3 good sized gars, one of them was huge. Also saw a few big flatties, and a big salmon.
SO it looks like we should kill em next week! As long as the weather cooperates.

Hey boys,
i jus wanna know what beach around like between the Seaford - Mornington area would giv me a good shot of spearing a decent fish..(not toadys <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' /> ) is a sandy beach better than a rocky/weedy beach?

i haven't gone out for a while but jazman says it is FREEZING in port phillip at the moment.
jaz is the expert when it comes to picking a spot so i will leave answering that bit to him.

Unfortunately the forecast looks terrible until at least next weekend, so we'll just have to play it by ear for the next floundering session. 20-30 knot winds are no good!
Adam I've only floundered beaches around the Chelsea area, but Seaford is close by and I'd imagine that you'd have just as good a chance there as anywhere, maybe better because it doesn't get as much fishing pressure as beaches closer to Melbourne.
My boss at work said he used to go floundering at Frankston beach back in the 60's.
Basically any sandy beach on this side of the bay is a chance for flounder at night, but rockier beaches may still have flounder on the sand patches. The frustating thing is that the fish can be there in numbers one night, and absent the following night, so the important thing is to keep at it, if you put the time in you will reap the rewards.
I went out on Friday night briefly before the wind got up, and speared a 51cm flathead, a smaller flathead, a mullet and a good gar. Spewing that the weather has turned ugly, because the fish are about right now.

Glen I have been spearing all my gars recently, I find I lose less big gars spearing them than netting them. But I have a net attached to the side of my float for the smaller gars, it's just held with a vertical piece of pipe screwed to the drum that I can slip the net handle into.

Just an update on the next group floundering mission...it won't be for a while, forecast for the weekend is woeful, Monday and Tuesday have 10-15 knot winds forecast, still a bit strong for good floundering, fingers crossed the weather will behave itself later in the week.

hey guys, i went floundering this evening as a last minute thing. I was on the east side of Port Phillip Bay.
i got one nice flathead, about 6 garfish and 1 medium squid. good enough for me! i saw 2 flounder but left them be. I don't really like eating flounder anymore.
i am just glad i was wearing 2 pairs of pants and 3 pairs of socks under my chest waders! arghh its cold out there!
conditions were good. no wind. water was a little murky though.

Got home from volleyball last night at 11:30, straight in the water, conditions were absolutely brilliant, lots of fish too. I ended up with 2 garfish, 2 flounder, 4 mullet (one was huge, 41cm and approx. 1kg) and a nice squid. Could've had 5 or 6 more mullet if my aim was better, they were everywhere. Came in at 1:15 when my feet were numb, and cleaned fish until 2 (the worst thing about a successful trip). I'll post pics when my film is finished.

Also, well done Glen! Did you spear the gars, there were some thumpers about. Also, did you notice that the fish were behaving 'strangely'?
I had a lot of fish, mullet and gars especially, swim straight at the light, either slowly, or very fast followed by a jump out of the water! Something was up last night. Those fish were crazy, it was almost like they were playing chicken with the light.

i netted 2 gars and speared the rest. the bigger gars seem a bit smarter and they are pretty hard to net! the gars were all pretty big!
i saw a school of maybe 50 mullet but they were all less than 10 inches long. i had the net in my hand at the time and had no luck scooping them up.
i didn't notice any "chicken" behavour. i wish i had! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Pat, Glen and Angelo you didn't miss out on much, only 1 flounder and 1 mullet for 2 hours walking in the icy water, it was so cold I nearly lost a vital appendage..... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
Conditions started off perfect, but deteriorated as the night wore on.
Oh well there's always next time
