I AM NOT VERY KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT FISHING FOR SQUID IN PORT PHILLIP BAY ! JUST RECENTLY STARTED TO FISH THE BAY MADE THE TRANSITION FROM FRESHWATER FISHING TO SALT WATER FISHING <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> WE LAUNCH OFF ALTONA AND I WAS HOPING THAT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME WITH SOME GOOD SQUID MARKS AND BEST TECHNIQUES FOR THE BAY. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/as.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer_mug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

gday AMPS,

I fish quite a bit out of Altona and have recently (past year or so) been targetting the calamari around Altona area. Have a read of the Altona Report thread and you'll see some photos and reports on what jigs have worked for me, and general locations.

whenever you fish around the reefs at Altona have a squid jig out and you will be pleasantly surprised more times than not <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Cheers

howdy,

Launched at Altona for a go at the snapper deep near fawkner beacon/spoilground area but made sure i took the squid jigs with me cause i had heard of arrow squid being caught <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

dropped a silver whiting on a jig and instant success, after we got a couple and it was clear that no snapper bait was going to survive for more than 10mins down there i started using arrow squid tentacles as snapper baits,...

Low and behold they started getting hit by arrow squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

So we were catching arrow squid, on arrowsquid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' />

Cheers

Well done AK, and cheers for the report, I was wondering when the arrows would start firing.

They are amazingly aggressive, I'm not surprised that you were catching them on arrow squid bait! I have often caught them on baits meant for flathead.

Are they destined for the frying pan or the bait freezer??

Good stuff <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

agressive buggers is one way of describing them... my hand has scratches from their bloody tentacles latching onto me!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />

tentacles for bait and hoods for the table, i'm going to try immersing in kiwi fruit for 1hr to tenderise and see what happens,...

just a quick report,

tried for calamari out at pt cook and only managed a small one ~20cm hood on a silverwhiting. we tried every colour jig with no results, a couple of other boats were trying but i didnt see them land any.

PS. Falcon the squid was soft after the kiwi fruit marinade <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />
