More floundering
#1
Hi all, went off Chelsea 10pm-midnight for 1 flounder, 1 flathead and 1 mullet, saw heaps of small flounder, LOTS of mullet and salmon swimming around in schools, and an obscene number of small octopus (must have seen well over 100). Also (AK, take note) there were lots of big sand crabs, but 95% were completely buried in the sand, with only their eye stalks visible. It was unnerving when I accidently stepped on one, and it attcked my legs (thank god for the waders!).

Cheers

Hi Jazman,

I went last night (it was nice and calm) to Edithvale and I got 3 flounder! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> I also missed a nice flathead. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

There was 100's of octopii like you said. I only saw 2 mullet and they were very spooky. I didn't see any salmon. I noticed lots of crabs buried in the sand like you said.

Take it easy. glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

Hi guys

Glen, 30cm is a good flounder. Nice one! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

AK, if you end up going to Chelsea or Edithvale on Saturday night (and if you get this message before then!) send me a text message, and if i'm not busy I'll definately come out with you guys. My mobile number is 0400996975. Glen, if you're free you should come along too!

Only thing is, the beach will be packed (41 degrees on Saturday), and parking could be difficult. Not sure what the wind is doing either. Wait and see I guess.

Cheers

Hi guys,

well Jaz was right, the Chelsea beach was packed with people. The weatehr did some wierd and wonderful things from dead clam to windy then drops of rain, back to calm conditions and then back came the wind! all in the space of 1.5hrs <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I wasnt going to let that stop me though so i found an are where there werent any people in hte water near the chelsea surf lifesaving club and made a start there.

We got 18 octopus, those small pinkish coloured ones. I saw 3 garfish and 1 small calamari, not within spearing distance unfortunately. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Anyway we had fun and it was good to be floundering again <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> , eventhough i didnt see much in the way of fish.

Well done AK, and yes the beach was seriously packed, I didn't go floundering either.

I haven't eaten my octopus yet, but I'm sure they'd be safe to eat.

hehehe,...

There's nothing wrong with the occies, 4 of us ate them and we all survived Big Grin Big Grin

There was a deep gutter, chest high, as you walked in towards deeper water, then the water went down to ankle height deep, it was eerie wading out in chest heigh water knowing that it would become shallow again... saw a calamari and banjo on the drop off.

Glen where abouts along Chelsea beach did you go floundering last week?

Try looking for "Australian Seafood - Domestic species" species published by the CSIRO. ISBN - 0-643-06194-0 they list a baby octopus in this publication.

Thanks El guapo, you've certainly given us a plethora of information <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'll try and find that book.

Something else I found out about the "baby" octopus is that they're not babies at all, they are adults of a different species to the larger occys that you see (I'm pretty sure that the commonest large octopus in southern australia is called the maori octopus)

They tasted nice, a bit chewy though.
