would you mind posting a photo so i know for sure that they are a zebra fish. they do fit your subscription, but i did a google images search and it was hopeless.... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> every fish that had black or white in it came up so now im really confused as to what a zebra fish looks like. if you could post an image that would be great and ill tell if its the same.

hey guys,
went for a spear at mordi today.... A COMPLETE DISASTER!!! the day started well with 3 of us out there and within 10 secs of getting in the water my mate got a good bream. i pulled it off the spear for him and attached to the float ( around my ankle ). anways after about 10mins of chasing fish non-stop i turned around to check on my float, i pulled the rope towards me and there was no float of the end!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' /> that'll teach me to check my knots every trip! anyways we got out of the water and searched for it for about half an hour and then gave up. we got back in the water and by that time... ALL THE FISH HAD GONE! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' /> We kept swimming for about another half hour and then i spotted a school of australian salmon. they swam off quick as a flash and that was that... could this day get any worse??? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> i didnt think so until i found a school of large mullet about 3m away from me! i took aim and fired away with my sling. i hit the fish on its back and it had 2 prongs in it. i relaxed and began to pull it towards me. the fish looked like it was dead instantly but after about 5 seconds it suddenly came back to life. it wriggled its way off the spear and took off towards his friends. so thats two good sized fish wasted in an hour. but wait theres more. i spotted some more mullet and pulled up the rubber on my sling and *SNAP* it broke... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry:' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> i swam back to shore and got out. my other friend soon got out too and took his mask and snorkel off before he got out. by this time the wind had picked up and the visibility had worsened. he didnt notice until he was out of the water that his mask was missing as he was holding onto his snorkel and when he went back to search for it there was no sign. so if anyone finds a blue and white float around mordi with a bream on it just know its mine and please contact me...

I really dont like Port Phillip Bay...Westernport all the way man!!! I bet u wont lose anything there!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
Im headed there this Saturday (between Point Leo and Flinders)...30+ degrees, Northwesterly winds, low tide at 1pm....sounds like a yummy dinner!
Oh and you've made me decide to buy a spare rubber for my spear before i go...$10 bucks...not a big deal. Better safe than sorry!

yeah a spare rubber is a good idea... glen, it is only the first rubber ive snapped on my sling so im gonna stick with my sling for a bit longer. im sorry if in my post it seems like i said that i broke the sling, but i only broke the rubber.

Well Poodge, you did have a bad day. I went out yesterday at Mordi, and found some really good ledges i will keep checking back on. Finished up with 2 red mullet ( both hiding away under ledges) and some leather jackets. There were plenty of gars around and butterfish. Yes i picked up a spare rubber to yesterday (thank god, rebel sport is restocking there spears and rubebrs). i also went otu on Sunday during the festival and got a red mullet. Maybe you should try just carrying an onion bag around instead of a float, it works a treat although i might move in and use a float.

you are better off having the fish at the float rather than around your waist just in case a shark comes for a feed.
i had a friend that had this happen to him twice. the shark just took the fish from the float and left him alone. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

hey guys, me again! went out to mordi again today got 5 fish... 3 mullet approx 25cm, 1 pinkie was about 20cm and 1 salmon about 25cm. it really annoys me how the fish look so much bigger underwater.

although i'm sure you thought it was bigger, you need to be real careful about those size limits. get caught taking undersized pinkies and they'll take all your gear, and the fish too...

That's not real good PJ - as Steeny said be careful, or better still don't spear tiddlers. 20cm is way undersized for a snapper.

i know i know, its not like i was aiming for the babies... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> but whenever i shoot into a school of fish the one i aim at usually realises whats happening and gets out of the way quick smart. i know its a lame excuse but you really dont know what your gonna get. also, when you do shoot a smaller fish what can you do? its a waste if you leave it there dead. i am gonna pick my shots a lot better from now on. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

Relax PJ im sure we have all made our mistakes against fish size regulations at some point. Everyone makes mistakes. All we can do is strive to do our best and shoot legal stuff. And if you sometimes break the rules...learn how not to make the same mistake and move on.
LOL...just try telling this to the Vic Fishing Authorities...they'll be extra nasty with you and ur gear for giving them a mouth full of what they would call BS!
But yeah the boys are right...those patrolers are real tight when it comes to the rules...so be careful.

Hey guys, the butter fish file was large to go thourgh ( maybe cos the fish was so nice)
any way i seem to go to mordi all the days you dont poodge. Went out yesterday, saw heaps of garfish, salmon or mullet, heaps of bream (all undersize). Where abouts are findind the snapper at mordi. I generally find my red mullet straight out from the tip of the pier at the furthest part of the reef, my leather jackets halfway, and my mullet in close, but i have never seen snapper. and no sight of your float yet!

Undersized...pffft, dont stress too much mate. While I am a great advocate for responsible fishing I'm not going to get on my moral high horse and bag ya out over one undersize fish. I mean, we've all had times when your goggles are filled up with water and you've got sand in you jocks and in the heat of the moment youve speared a tad pole.
Its the law of the sea I say. Still, better to leave the small ones and the protected ones back in davey jones locker if ya do muck up. Better than fealing the full wrath of the fisheries when you return to shore with the evidence (I've still never seen them though).

went to mordy again today and picked my shots very very carfully indeed! i was there for the whole day (but wasnt just spearing the whole time). i did 3 seperate spearing sessions of about 45mins and of those i only got 2 fish. the biggest mullet ive ever seen! it was close to 40cm. and weighed nearly 1kg cleaned. i also got a 32cm bream. there are millions of bream! its so good to see such a wide variety of fish in our bay. today i saw bream, leatherjacket, snapper, mullet, salmon, garfish, banjo shark and whiting. i saw so much but only speared two. i found a reef swarming with snapper but as i felt so bad from the previous trip i was too cautious as to which ones would be big enough. i didnt end up shooting any.
back to the mullet. it was swimming slowly, by itself on the sandy seafloor. for a start it was on the bottom when it should be about mid water. i'd already seen a school of mullet pass by and i thought it was just a straggler. i could see it was quite big and darker than any other mullet i'd seen and as i swam towards it, it continued to swim slowly. i got within two metres of it and it saw me and tried to get away. so i shot it. out of instinct more than anything. as soon as i got this fish i headed in. my mates had already gone in i thought it was a good excuse for a break. while i was swimming with it on my spear i noticed there was something wrong with it. its eyes were kind of green when they should have been yellow. they were also indented, as if they had been pushed inwards. it didnt really struggle at all until i was out of the water and then it went nuts. i cleaned my bream and then proceeded on cleaning the mullet. it skin was very tough and when i finally cut it open it was full of orange gunk. there were two big finger-like things inside it. (they looked similar to the claspers on the bottom of male sharks). also there was something in it that looked like an eyeball. it was an off white colour and was connected by red matter. cutting it open it was very much like an onion. fairly tough, with layers. i think this fish will end up as bait rather than food unfortunately. there was definately something wrong with it. even if it is ok to eat, i'd rather not take the chance. have any of you guys encountered mullet like this?

no but a few days ago at mordi we caught a leatherjacket that was really squishy, insanely squishy.
DO u see your snapper are u going out past the last reef in line with the end of the pier, i jsut cant seem to find any. But your right, heaps and heaps of bream.

when you said you get red mullet, how far out do you go? ive never seen any of them in the water.
