Rapid Bay Jetty - SA
#1
Hey Guys!

This is a bit of a problem - Rapid Bay jetty in South Australia is in danger of being closed off to all recreational fishing and diving. It is regarded as one of the best squidding, and general fishing platforms close to Adelaide, and was recently damaged by storm activity, which resulted in it being closed off about 200m down, which wipes out what i feel is the best part for fishing.

Im just after a bit of help.

I have been in contact with our rec fishing body - SARFAC - and they wrote to our transport and tourism minister on the issue 3 months ago and are yet to recieve a response, so i am trying to continue the fight for them.

If there is anyone on this site, whom has fished or dived at Rapid Bay in the past, or would consider it, i am asking if you could email our ministers just to try and show them that we have many interstate visitors who use the jetty, not only local fisherpeople.

Contact details:

Make your emails out to these two:

Hon Michael Wright (Minister for Transport)

minister.wright@saugov.sa.gov.au

Jane Lomax-Smith (Minister for Tourism)

jls@saugov.sa.gov.au

And just for good measure can you CC to these two:

Rob Kerin (Leader of the Opposition)

liberal.opposition@parliament.sa.gov.au

Paul Holloway (Minister for Fisheries)

pirsa.minister@saugov.sa.gov.au

Ok, thanks a lot guys!!

Nathan

Glen - is there anyway you can make this topic stand out a bit more - so that people see it more easily!

Hi Nathan,

I agree that this is a very important issue and everyone should be writing to the relevant Ministers!

I have one query about whether the Minister for Transport is the correct Minister. Just thought I would ask you to confirm this. Certainly the Minister for Tourism would be very concerned though probably have no direct management responsibility. Who currently manages this structure? Which Minister do they report to?

We might be able to start a poll on the website too if that would assist. I am not sure if it would have the same weight as a formal petition. Let me know if this would be worthwhile.

Cheers, Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Glen,

Yeah, not sure if there would be all that much point in doing a poll on here - but i might have to organise a petition - get it around to all the tackle stores in SA, and maybe some people on here might be able to help me get one to tackle stores in other states, just to help out.

As for the transport minister question - Transport SA used to own the jetty as it was used for shipping, and SARFAC suggested that i email the transport minsiter as maybe they may help out with the current situation.

I think current ownership is with the government...........

Thanks

Nathan

Do you know who is responsible for the Rapid Bay Jetty?

My friend and I have contacted local Council as soon as jetty was closed off after the forst storm damage. They advised us that Transport SA is responsible for the jetty.

Apparently there has been a terndering process for the repair of the jetty but nothigh has happened so far.

It is either to expensive or they are all to slow ( they do not fish at Rapid Bay?!).

People climb over the fence regularly and as soon as accident happens they will close it off completely.

Currently jetty is not as good as it used to be but it is better than nothing!

There sre plenty of us who would be interested to get involved and offer our time and efforts in getting this fixed.

Kind regards,

Tom Bacic

Transport SA is in charge. I have contacted them with my letter and got a reply saying a resolution was a long way off, and then i forwarded this letter to SARFAC and they are currently planning to go public with something, not sure what yet.

Will keep you posted!! Keep fighting!!

Cheers!

Its a good cause Antony and also a nice website there too. You have some great photos of Leafy Sea Dragons. I would love to see one of those snorkelling one day. They are still at it - this plan to close the Rapid Bay Jetty. There isn't much in the way of storm damage to the jetty. It just needs a lot of maintenence.

Community support is essential - please add your voice and help keep the jetty open for fishing for us and future generations. It's too good to sit back and lose.

For more information please visit:

www.rapidbayjetty.org

Send your leters to the minister and please download the petition from the site, get as many signatures as you can and send it in!

cheers!

i think that government wants to fix the jetty. its just hasnt given a time frame. maybe by the time we get the soccer world cup....... but just imagine the catch when it does eventually get re opened. you wont be able to get a spot for weeks.

Hey glen!

I havent been on here for awhile. The site looks really great!!

On the RBJ - they are a lot more advanced than the last report. They are currently looking for a design for the jetty, and it looks like within a couple of years it could be rebuilt. Im still not holding my breath, but i am getting confident!

Just for those keeping up with this and interested in fishing RBJ.

The new jetty is in progress and should be finished by Xmas they are saying if the weather holds.

Am heading down that way this weekend for my first crack at the squid in a long time!! If we end up driving through RB I will get a few photos.
