Modifying baited jigs
#1
hi,

I recently saw some baited jigs that had been modified, the jigs were painted black and a third row of barbs added.

Has anyone else tried these mods to their baited jigs?

Do you think that painting them black, suposedly to make them less visible under water i guess, would give you a bit of an edge if the calamri are finiky?

The guys that were using them were catching whilst noone else was.... but they also had the whole end of the Flinders pier to themselves <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

How would you add a third row of barbs?

Hi badluck,

Yeah the whole jig was painted black.

The jigs looked like they were home-made with each row of barbs being binded onto a main metal shaft. The bottom row of barbs had significantly fewer barbs than your standard baited squid jig.

I thought it was interesting that they were black, and that they were catching with this homemade gear.

What some of the old timers do is attach 3 large barbed hooks to their baited jig by simply running the hooks through the barb needle and keeping the hooks in place by threading some mono through all the eyes and onto the jig. The two guys that I've seen using this both did very well especially in not 'dropping' many squid. Both were experienced "squid ink runs through my viens" types which probably had allot to do with it.

I have just purchased a Yo- Zuri squid lure which is called a shrimp hunter.

It has the barbs painted black already. It is multi coloured and has the feathers along the underside.(I suppose to look like the prawns feet.)

Another jig I purchased was a normal looking prawn style but the difference is in it's size. It is approx 25cm long. When it is being retrieved it feels like you have a squuid on your line already.

The first mentioned lure cost me $20 and the huge one cost $8.

Has anyone used these before and are they any good.
