Went to Mordialloc pier yesterday started to squid fish around 7pm till about 11pm. So my mate and I had about 4 hours there. Didn’t catch or lose any squid. From what I could see the other 25 or so people there fishing had there rods rigged up for fishing medium sized fish and some for garfish.

I’m pretty sure we were the only ones trying to catch squid. I had this ethic guy (maybe Greek or some sort of Arab) come up and asked me what I was fishing for. I told him; squid. He replied back “your fishing at the wrong time, you need to fish in March”. I said “But I caught 4 last week at Portsea pier”. He said “No no portsea is different, that’s there specialty down there”.

So yeah don’t think I’ll ever go back to Mordialloc, too many people and it has a bad atmosphere; teenagers drunk and jumping off the pier. I’ll just stick to Portsea; it’s only an hr’s drive for me away.

hi ken,

you probably picked a bad night! it was a particularly hot night so you need to expect a few drunks and loud mouths.

I experienced the same thing at Frankston pier last year on a hot night. It certainly does take away from the "serenity" of fishing! I was glad to go home!

Cheers, Glen

A few of us went to Mordialloc tonight around 6pm and stayed till 10pm. None of us caught anything! The water was clear. We worked all parts of the pier (yes even the closed off section)...especially concentrating on sections close to the lights....but nothing. I went through just about every jig I had and not a thing!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Talking to the other squid fisherman on the pier returned similar answers. So we went to the pub instead!

I haven't been to mordi for a bit. Which part is closed off? I'm guessing the end (cos it's a straight pier).

How far back? to the shelter?
Never happier than on a quiet pier, on a cold, dark, wet night, with a bucket to sit on, pole in hand and a fully charged iPod.

Its been closed for a while whilst it has been rebuilt. Pretty much the second half (deep end!!) has been locked off with a cyclone fence for ages. Errrm the fence is probably 25 metres past the shelter towards the beach...but the fence now has been ripped to pieces by the locals. So its all open! There are one or two railings unfinished at one spot, but other than that it looks all done and is solid! You can see part of the fence in my photo above.

I have just spent 5 hours at Mordi pier today trying for squid and salmon....and got NOTHING! Oh well it was better than watching TV! These two were the closest thing I saw to marine life!
