Hi John,
I have tried nibbing a bit of the weight off some jigs but its usually trying to fix a buggered cheap jig. the good jigs like yozuri and yamashita etc are already balanced well enough. don't forget that the angle and tension of your line can also have a big effect on the angle of the swimming jig. by lowering your rod slowly or pausing occasionally you can slow down the sink rate and this is sometimes a handy strategy.
