Mie, Nansei-cho - Japan
#1
Went out with a couple of mates to a secret place in Mie in the weekend.

Second time out and they took me to their secret spot (sorry landshark)

Apparently this spot is relatively untouched and a guaranteed hot spot <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />

I got into the action pretty quick and hooked up what felt like a big one. But two pumps from the squid and my leader broke <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> We were fishing a pretty rocky area and my leader was getting cut up real quick.

I move on after a while and tried another rock. There I got my first Aori (big-finned reef). The tiddler of the night <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />

I then managed to loose about 6 egis over the next hour or so <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> After I started checking my leader after every 2nd cast, I only lost 1 more. A rather expensive lesson.

Anyway, the 3 of us managed to catch 5 Aori between 300 and 700g and one octopus. Not bad for the season but well below expectation for the spot. We decided the cause was the setnet accross were the squid should have come swimming <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> Looks like we will be off squiding until autumn.

Water temps will get a bit too hot from now bit when it cools down again in autumn it should go off. Although, sizes will not be great.

Actually, if anything, we were there illeagaly <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> The set net would have been placed by local fishermen, it looked pretty permanent and there was a sign about poaching near the entrance to the rocks. What kind of poaching I have no idea but the area is famous for abalone and crayfish.

No worries Egized,

Tomorrow i am actually off to nagano for a month to work, so i will be chasing trout all summer.

Glad to see you had a good, allbeit expensive, trip.

Keep it up.

Actually, I am off to wakayama for Obon, do you think it will be too hot for ika down there?

At least the weather will be cooler in Nagano than down here.

I've only been to Wakayama once but I know its a hot spot for squid. I don't know if that applies all year round. I do know that they are catching Dolphin fish off the rocks now, if thats a hint <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well, while i was there i saw some small squid swimming around. The place i was and who i was with didn't allow a lot of time for lures or egi's(stayed at a ryokan with the wifes family). I did some spear fishing and spent about 30 minutes chasing a Kurotai of about 40-50cm?(please correct me here if i'm wrong egized) i don't know the exact english name, but it translates as a black snapper. But, there were too many rocks and i ran out of time. Going to another place tomorrow on the sea of japan side and then to an Island off Nagoya on sunday, will see if there is anything to report.

The Japan Sea is warming up now. I was up there 2 weeks ago and the squid were still a bit small but I hear people are catching "croquette" size now. I'm going back next weekend for a competition near Fukui City.

I also went to Toyohama, Chita on Friday night, just after the typhoon. Water was pretty dirty and I didn't even get a bite. I had worked double my hours last week and was feeling pretty shagged so piked before midnight. Mate slept in his van and got 6 in the morning <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> But biggest were 15cm

Went back down to Nansei over the New Year. Mate got his boat license so we rent a boat for a day. Not much wind in the morning and managed to get 7 between us, 4 female and 2 male and 1 too small to tell.

Wind picked up in the afternoon so we packed it in an hour early. I kept having line trouble so had a go at rockfish for a change of pace and picked up a few Scorpion fish. Usually good eating but all were in spawn so released them all.

scorpion fish! are they poisonous?

If you manage to prick yourself with a dorsal spine you would suffer mild swelling and itching and the wound would be red for a couple of days. Officially, I think they are listed as poisonous.

Work is dead to say the best so I took a few days off and headed down south. Ran around a few of the fishing ports and some were packed despite it being a week day. Went to one place I had heard good things about and found it near deserted. Was using a blue/yellow marble Yamashita 3.5 without any response. Changed to the Old Faithfull pink marble 3.5 Daiwa and hooked up on the 1st cast. Had set my drag with a 1 litre bottle of water and then tightened it a tuurn or two but it was taking line so I knew it was big. Got it in through the seaweed and gaffed it.

1.9kgs of hissing, seething Aori. Beats my previous best by 1kg <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Went back down on Sunday. Same bay and same boat with the same mate. Spent 12 hours out.

Morning was good for squid and managed to get 9.

Afternoon was spent franticly and fruitlessly chasing boilups but manged to bag one more squid around 3pm for a total of 10. Mate got 29.

Almost the same. The Japanese one is Sepioteuthis lessoniana while the Aussie one is Sepioteuthis australis

Don't know what the difference is but they do look exactly the same.

Looking at the comments on here, I think the Japanese ones are more agressive. Last weekend we only used 3.5 egis and still got some that weighed in under 100g. You guys seem to use small egis alot more than we do.
