Those Tricky Pikes

Off the Flinders jetty there is amost always pike splashing about. Like a few others i've tried to snag them using a variety of means, floated bait, unweighted bait, lures ....no luck.

Recently i've had a bit of luck on the other side of the bay using soft plastics. The most successfull has been a plastic that is dark brown and a green with some flurescence. I have lost most because I only use 6lb line and trace.

Still learning to catch these tricky buggers. What is your experience with them?

They are annoying, and smelly <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' /> But the long-finned pike taste a lot better (IMO) than the short-finned pike (AKA Snook). I have encountered both species a lot targeting snapper on shallow reefs using SPs - I haven't found an SP that they prefer over others, if I did I think I'd remove that one from my tackle box <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbsup2:' /> I generally use 3" and 4" minnow SPs (stickbaits) in natural colours (blues, browns, greens)



I've also caught a lot on trolled lures - medium sized (7-9cm) diving minnows seem to do OK.

Hey I don't know if it is any diferant in Morton Bay? But I see them at night around my local jetty howing into the baitfish a bit but mostly just hanging out. I can't for the life of me get a consistant catch at night. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> The ocasional on small live bait. But for some reason during the day they don't seem to be at the jetty. But I found I can catch heeps of them over the weed beds at low tide, or close too on silver spoons. So I just let other people waist their time trying to catch em and pay a little attention when the ocasin strikes that one is caught.
