Fatboi and Glen,
At least there are fishos down there. I know what you mean by people swarming an area when a squid is caught. I was down there today (prefect day by the way) and i caught one small squid. The next thing i knew was that i had lines crossing everywhere around me. I was going quite well until my line was crossed and tangled so many times by all these people around me. Because of that, I lost two of my best jigs that were catching the squid for the day. I was reeling a squid up, and it got off just near the surface. Three jigs flew at my squid straight away, leaving me no chance of catching my own squid. It was shocking.
It was nice to see a fisho down there for the first time. He seemed a bit suspicous for after a while asking questions about limits etc. I figured out he was an undercover fisho. He explained to me that he was just looking out for real squid poachers that go there often. As I am of an asian background, he explained that some groups of mainly Vietnamese fishermen often go down and catch countless numbers of them (I've seen this too). He was just going around sussing people out. So at lease they are there, looks like their after the main illegal fishermen.

it happend to me 2 i had caught five and this guy casts the rod above my head i stood up and head butted his pole and i told him if he doesnt move ill report to the fisheries and still that didnt work so a guy helped me and told him to move on

though Ive never done this myself I have seen my dad do it a few times at Queenscliff in his hey days and its bloody funny

supersquid, its a great idea, however, i think you might find it a tad difficult to kick 20 people in. methinks you might find yourself in the water!!!

Yeah I know fatboi but heres one that is tried tested and true
I didnt plan this but I had a feed of dim sims, bean and onion salad, and then on the way to the peir picked up half a dozen steamed dim sims and a few beers and I can tell ya something the dim sims wernt the only thing steaming that night. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' />
to make a long story short the fun started about an hour later and I was dropping me guts all over the place, while I might of been out doors there was no wind and they lingered around for awhile,needless to say that people didnt hang around me for very long as I stunk to high heaven.

hahaha. hilarious. i will have to keep that in mind as a method for freeing up fishing space.

Yeah Glen it is funny but it does work on occassions just the noise puts some people off another is continuos singing or whistling or talking in strange tones with a weird look on you face its a total crack up.

theres a lot of good reports coming from all parts of the bay with squid in great numbers but only a few piers around the mornington side producing smaller sized squid if you have a boat then your in for a good feed

Hey guys,
Went down to mornington pier today for no squid. Weather was great but unfortunately nobody caught a squid all day. Plenty of small barracouta being caught. As for me i believe that the squid have gone quiet until spring.

Hi I went down to Mornington on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, caught 1 squid each time. Interesting thing was i was trying out soft plastics as well as the normal jigs. The thing i noticed with the plastics was the squid were following it up to the surface. Now all i need to do is put some hooks on it.
I've tried but the plastic becomes to heavy on the tail. Anyone sucessfully rigged up something like this and catch squid ?
Would like pics if possible.
I'm making up some wooden type jigs with cloth cothering, made a prototype looks ok, but a bit fat. Haven't tried it yet.

did you catch any fish on the soft plastics? i have seen guys catching flathead off the end of the pier but i tried to copy them and failed. you need to use gelspun line i believe to have any chance.

Glen,
No fish with the plastics, i fished on the small jetty. Berleyed up some garfish or mullet couldn't tell what they were, but only had some size 1 suicide hooks. I used a bit of the squid i caught for bait but no hook ups..
Just came with the plastics and squid jigs..

next time go right to the end of the main pier and cast out from there. you will have more luck.

using squid jags with whiting at mornington?? id never have thought it could work there. ive only ever caught them there on small 2.0 yamashita's..and the only place id bothered to use silver whiting was at Portsea or Flinders where they get real big.
can anyone confirm whether silver whitings is the go, even at mornington?

I have found it always pays to have a silver whiting out. I have caught small calamari on them when they wouldnt take small jigs <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />

Hey,
In all the times ive been down to mornington, I've only seen the silver whiting been used once. These people wern't catching any either, with the artificial lures outfishing them. Might be luck of the day, but i guess it pays to always be prepared if you want to catch them.

went down to mornington pier yesterday evening( 5pm-7pm). NOTHING caught.. the swell was so rough, you could have surfed the waves!!
i think its about time i learnt how to interpret the 'wind' reports before driving for an hour....;-)
i think i'll try the silver whiting down at portsea or queenscliff this weekend.

I hardly ever use whiting I am quite partial to salted pilchards, you might have read here of me singing their praise time and again
Silver whiting ,gars and normal pilchards are all top baits for squid but I have found salted ones last longer, are refreezable and the squid tend to go at them harder.
I dont know whether its the change in color that does it but I have caught my best bags using Salted pilchards, problem is they are getting harder to get.
Wind plays a Big factor when catching squid and so does tides ( although some may disagree) If you get you tides, times you fish and wind right then you chances of catching squid improve dramaticaly.
My preference for Queenscliff fould be something like this
Early morning or late evening rising tides
S/SW Wind of 10 to 20 knots
working around the areas where the lights fade out
You will find the guys using poles arnt catching much thats becuase they leave their lures and baits still, squid will always attack a moving bait more freely thats why the pole guys tend to catch more on windy night as their poles are moving with the wind.Fish the landing area at Queenscliff under the last light sitting on the steps about half way down, this is a real hot spot on this peir.
Huge cuttlefish are around in good numbers at queenscliff at the moment, good luck if you can land one

i went down to mornington pier on tuesday morning this week (19th july) from 7am till noon.
conditionds were calm but freezing. there were a couple of ppl around and most ended up catching a just a few. quiet overall, but no tiny squd around-most were a good size.
i caught 3 altogether, with the biggest hood measuring 25cm. i also happen to catch my first arrow squid to my surprise. all on size 2 pink yamashita.
a guy next to me who was the only person ive seen at mornington using a 'float + salted pilchard or whiting rig'
pulled in a huge arrow squid from the left side(bayside) of the pier at the deep end at around 9-10am.
it was the biggest squid ive seen caught there in my time...was almost a black/red colour! im not good with my 'weight's' but it would have measured at least 40cm along the hood;-)
hopefully more arrow squid are hangin about!
