Hi,
I drifted for calamari in 8~15ft of water in close off the rocks of mornington. nothing much happened until i thought i snagged the bottom only to see line peel off the reel. I ended up boating a 2kilo cuttlefish on my favourite orange razorback jig. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' />
I saw another boat get a calmari and a nice squirt of ink all over the side of the boat, cheecky buggers

I have yet to catch a cuttlefish.
Have you eaten it? Taste any good?

Hi Glen,
I have not eaten this one yet but i have caught and eaten cuttlefish before. I actually prefer them to calamari because they aren't as "sweet" tasting to me. Nice and soft too, but i guess that depends on how you cook them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
They are a pain in the backside to clean because of the layers upon layers of "skin" they have on the outside, unlike the calamari which seems to come off in one hit.

I had the cuttlefish for dinner, it was unbelievably soft and very tasty <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
It was cut into 1inch squares and cooked in a tomato sauce, then poured over a bed of rice.

Hi,
whilst i was fishing for snapper out of mornington in 20m of water i lowered a silver whiting jig to the bottom and then raise it half a meter off the bottom. I caught an arrow squid, 30cm hood.
i tried closer to shore in 7~3m of water drifting from deep to the shallows with no takers. tried artificial jigs and silver whiting.

Nice work with the arrow. I got one down at flinders on a silver whiting on Saturday. I reckon pound for pound they fight much better than calamari. I don't want to steal your snapper secrets (actually, I do!)......but are there any snapper about in PPB yet? I heard of some guys getting them at the top of Western Port Bay on the weekend, but I haven't heard any good reports for Port Philip (sorry for chatting about non-squid fishing here!)

i went out with another 3 boats, only one boat caught snapper 1@7kg, 1@6kg and 1@3kg <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> . On sunday another boat went out and got a 5kg snapper and a 2.5kg gummy. Try between Mornington and Frankston <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Fished what is left of Mornington peir 14/10/03 and it was dead as a door nail the peir hasnt been touched and is fenced off
their is a sign that says that th peir rebuild is still pending design so I think we are going to be without this great fishing spot for a long long time while the port Authorities and the Gumbyment argue over its repair
I heard a local rumor that it could be two years before we can fish this peir again, it seems we a loosing land based sites at a alarming rate as peirs are shut down due to insurance reasons. its dissapointing that their taking sooo long to repair my favourite pier if ever..
its not really that damaged anyway.., just a few new planks of wood and some bolts and its done!

Yes, it is a pity the authorities are taking their sweet time over this repair - it has been 5 months since the damage to the pier. I paid the location a visit today at lunchtime. No telltale signs of squid ink. I noticed schools of garfish though over at the little jetty where the boats are moored, but no fishos. This has been such a happy fishing ground for many, myself included.

<img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> Went squiding last week @ mornington pier , i rigged 2.5 jigs under floats with 3 large split shot to weigh down , got there every one else had the jigs with a dropper sinker with cast & retrieve method, looked aroung nobody catching nothing, so i took a stroll up the pier for about 10 mins, got back to the rods , people hanging round the rods , one float bobbing under the water ...kool wound in a half kilo squid, on the rainbow colour jig , hung around for another half hour & got nothing , didn't see any one else get any, i like the lazy man float jigging, i had a rubber stop , fishing just off the bottom,,,, my first thread cheers fellow squid ppl

I mean, a 30cm mantle arrow squid is absolutely monstrous! Down in Sydney they only arrows you see are about 10cm in hood length. A 30cm mother would be so big <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> Just goes to show how good Victorians have over Sydneysiders....but we get the black drummer

Yeah we can get some bloody monster arrows down here.... I have had instances where i am pulling in one only to see a bigger arrow come up from behind and attach itself to the first one! :blink:

Hi ppl fished mornington pier sat early morning from 5.30am till 8.00am fishing under floats down deep one small squid jumped on first cast with small no 2 pink jig, a one hour wait till next squid of about half kilo on another rod with 2.5 pink jig, then another hour later a small squid on the no 2 pink jig , it was a full moon , note other jiggers on pier catching nothing using cast and retrieve with small sinkers, so i'll stick with the floats the water was a little bit choppy so this helps the jigs to move around a bit ,sorry bit late with report might give it ago this sat morning too . <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
