Good to see you've made it to this site and that you are getting stuck into a few.
The issue of number of lines is very difficult. I dont see a problem with having 4 lines out if you are at a spot by yourself. It helps not to freeze to death and keep you occupied to move around check your lines. But if others want to fish there, some commonsense has to prevail and you have to pull out a line or two or move them. Ofcourse this relies on having good natured non greedy people on the jetty - this is not a reality. Unfortunately there is quite a few selfish pricks out there.
A while ago I dragged in a large squid about 30 metres before the end on the left hand side only for him to let go twice. By the time I threw in the jig for the third time two guys who were fishing on the other side had there lines in trying to catch him. Luckily he reattached to my jig, but if one of the others had caught it I would've truly clocked them.
Simon, have you posted any of your fishing video on the net? Would be keen to see that fighting Giant trevally.

Thanks for the reply. The points you made were valid. I suppose when it's quiet It would be O.K. to have several lines out and retrieve a couple if it got busy on the pier. Unfortunately this scenario applys in theory but rarely in practice. Let's hope for some common sense.
By the way, you have a good memory in regards to my story about the trevally footage. I had'nt thought of posting it on this site and actually, I hav'nt posted it anywhere. I'll try to get around(figure out how) to compressing it and posting it.

P.S. Glen, I'm hanging out to see your video footage of the squid attack but I can't get it to play on my Mac. One of the guy's mentioned ensuring downloading the right version of media player which I've done but still no luck. I'm not exactly a computer whiz either which does'nt help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Simon, I limited the size of the uploaded picture and video files so my server will not get too clogged up. If you have your own personal website you could host big video files on there and just provide a link to it in the squidfish forums. Most ISPs give you 10 or 20mb of space to have your own free webpage. They usually make it reasonably easy to upload files. If you need any help let me know.

Hi Snapperman,
Would you believe I hav,nt really targeted snapper here in Melbourne. The boat mainly gets used for water skiing in the summer and for fishing up at the Whitsundays when I get a chance. I suppose I'm not that confident of being able to get onto 'em. It's hard to find the time to get to know the right areas etc. I promised myself though that I'd get out as much as possible this year-I'll let you know if I get lucky. Have you heard any reports?
Weather permitting I'll be giving the squid a bash at least down at queenscliff. I'll post a report next week if I have any luck.

Arrive Flinders @ 5:00am, Car park half full. and the Hogs are back. But still I manage to find myself a spot to cast out 1 hand line and 1 rod.
Actually overheard somebody saying they have been there since 9:00 pm Friday, which can only mean hogs were there before him.
Anyhow, Great day to be out, even if your not catching.
Come ~8:00am I was serioulsly thinking about packing it in as it was very quiet when I heard something bouncing on the peir.
I looked across, and saw another guy and thought he was just going about his own.
But still I heard this noise, I re-cast out my rod, & walked up to my hand line and found the source. Line was being pulled out at a steady but slow pace and Yep I was on.
Cut a long story short managed to pull up a 2 KG specimen. Adrenolen still pumping, all of a sudden my brother yells "your other line is on" over I run and take in another 1 kg specimen.
Being a quiet morning I also had a crowd behind me (hogs were looking and passing comment too).
I guess success is the sweetest revenge.

Howdy all,
Went down to Flinders with friends Jim and Marco in a boat on Saturday, and nailed 20 crocs to 3.5 kg on silver whiting and pilchard baits. There was a fair size range to the squid we caught, and they came mostly in ones and twos, but at one stage we caught 6 X 3-3.5kg beasts in 10 minutes (much to the annoyance of the boats fishing near us). Still haven't wiped the smile off my face! Fishing time was 5am-noon.
Also noticed some guys on the pier pulling in a few.

Is it possible to pinpoint the specific spot you were at (GPS) so that I can go there immediately and wait ..... with lots of patience .... for my share of monster calamari?

Hey fellas
Um, I don't have a GPS, but I can tell you that we were only fishing maximum 6-700m from the pier, mostly towards the left (at least that's where we got most of the big fellas) and we just drifted around until we found the patches. As for the magic oil.....it was my birthday on Friday, and I think I had some birthday luck! The last two times we have gone to Flinders we only got 2 X 2kg, and then 3 @ 1, 2 and 3kg, so I think that it is just the luck that you have on the day. My biggest piece of advice....you have to fish 1m from the bottom, or don't bother. You'll get some snags, but if you use heavy enough line (we had 30kg handlines) you won't lose many jigs. Also, quite strangely, we got the biggest one on an artificial jig (3.0 pink), so I think that if you're fishing on the bottom you're in with a good chance whether you're using artificials or baits.
Seriously, I hope that you guys get on to some, it's absolutely amazing to get on to the real big guys, and something I won't forget in a long time.

Well, I'm jealous!
Tried Flinders out from the reef as the tide slowed and turned.
Fished in 50 ft of water using a 3 gang hook rigged with a pilchard and we got ...... a whiting (good size).
A calamari followed it up to the surface and we invited it on board, compliments to a multicoloured jig. Two more suicide dives brought two more quality calamari.
Back in shallow water (12 feet) I fished for whiting using a tiny piece of squid and ...... a massive run on 20lb braided line for about 150 yards at super high speed. The drag on the spool was on maximum and the run lasted about 10 seconds. The smell coming from the drag was just like my clutch during a burnout. I tried stopping the spool using my thumb and burnt the skin. The fish eventually bit me off. I suspect we hooked a kingfish.
More calamari, leatherjackets and wrasse made the day a delight.
Looks like I'll be going back.

Hi guys,
Went to flinders pier yesterday arfternoon. We got 4 average squid between the two of us. Had a nice one grab the jig but he came off. A couple of guys next to us got 2 nice squid at least 1/2 a kilo each.
there was not any fish caught (except for toadies).

Went to Flinders on Saturday.
We got 2 nice garfish, 2 tommy ruffs, one silver trevally, 2 million smooth toad fish and 1 tiny squid! Ok maybe not millions but a lot of toad fish! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />
The water was quite murky because of the big swells so I guess this partly explains why no decent squid were about.

Wes - quite often here in SA fish such as whiting and mullet will eat whole pilchards on triple ganged 6/0 hooks intended for mulloway, snapper, etc.
I know of one bloke who caught a 56cm whiting on a whole squid head on 6/0 hooks.......and another only two weeks ago who caught a 67cm whiting on a whole pilchard on twin 6/0 hooks.........
And quite often at Salt Creek in SA mullet are caught on mulloway baits - usually these fish around around the 35cm mark - big live baits we use them for
Also, kingfish wont bite you off, unless they snapped you off - either too much drag pressure or on a bit of reef - most likely a shark if it bit you off - or it could also be their rough skinned tail slapping on your line and breaking it through slowly......

I am so sick of these people living on peirs with too many
rods. I feel most sorry for my father who has the unfortunate
luck of being an excellent fisherman. Too many times has he
pulled up a good fish, be it it on a peir or on the sand, only to have
a swarm of fisherman imediatley cast several lines right on top of him,
even when the spot he is fishing is the only one he can fish, from
areas being too full. When we find fishing spots that few people go to,
or none at all, we keep it a secret, I know that part of being a good fisherman is sharing secrets but, if doing so means that places are going to become crowded with obnoxious fisherman, then I choose not to share. I dont particully like calimari, and one of my 'secret' spots has so many of them it makes it difficult to catch anything else, but its because i throw back, that these kind of places exist.
Im almost certain alot of these fisherman who live on peirs with so many lines are industrial fisherman, though i doubt any of them have appropriate licenses.
I find the best places to fish are those which are most inaccessable, the fisherman who is willing to go to the most remote and hardest places to get to is likely to be rewarded the best.

People like that, that swarm when one person catches a fish, annoy me to no end - happens a lot here when people catch squid - everyone swarms on top of them!! Usually they watch one, and then once a second one comes up they come from everywhere - only problem is, as most people should know, that squid hunt in pairs, so usually they bugger off after 10 mins or so.
But this about remote and hard to find is spot on, and hence the reason i invested in a 4wd not long ago - it allows me to get to places a conventional 2wd couldnt access!!

I know exactaly how you feel
My dad used to endure alot of swarming on Queenscliff peir as he was a master at catching squid and as soon as he hooked up people would be on top of his lines
in seconds, I once witnessed him toss a guy in the water because he virtually wanted my dads spot and asked him to move his lines so he could have the spot
Dad said you want this spot the guy said yes so dad piffed him in the water
needless to say he didnt get annoyed by any of the regulars there again
