Newport, RI - 2005 squid season

Squids are definitely not in yet. I think Tho is pulling our chain. I've froze my ass for nothing. There's no I mean N-O evidence of any squid fishing activity. I think "Tho" mean to say, that it's about that time of year and to prepare your gear. Squid didn't invade until May last year so I expect the same for this season.

Hi squid_man,



I think the squid in Newport might be in a little earlier only because they are seeing striper bass and i heard when the strippers are in.... the squid are in...

I have a lot of customers (Rhode Island, Massachusettes) that are going to start hitting the water this weekend. Expecting the squid any time now.



When I start getting reports from my customers, I'll try to post something in here to put the word out.

Not necessarily, squids are usually in before the stripers are. It's not until stripers and blues flood Newport Bay, that the squids become scarce. In my experience, the squid generally are in first. Stripers usually are upperbay at this time of the year.

Striper action so far around here is holdovers by the power plant. Herring are running though so everything is starting to move. My guess is another week.

Hi. Squid lovers! I'm new to this site and glad I found this.



I'm from Japan and living in NY for few years.

I'm planning to go to New Port to fish some squid on next month.



What do I need to bring over there? I read the bridge of Goat Island is good to fish.

Is it OK for bigginer to fish in there? Is there anything important for bigginers to know?



Please give me some advise.

Hi Harry:



Here's what you need for squid fishing at Newport:



a light spinning reel/rod combo works the best



Yo-zuri style jigs seem to work best. Bring some extra jigs just in case the jigs got stuck at the bottom



assorted sinkers like 1/2 oz, 1 oz and 2 oz.



If you plan doing night fishing, bring a lantern.



Bring a folding chair to sit when action slows down.



wear something warm... it can get cold in a hurry.



squid fishing at Newport is easy and fun. When the squid are "in", everyone catches them.

Don't forget to bring a few friends too! If that's not possible then bring coolers so you can seperate some space from other fishermen or you'll end up rubbing elbows. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> Oh yea, one more thing... You want to go as early as possible and claim a parking space! Parking is very scarce there. Don't park at the Hyatt hotel lot or you'll get towed. I recommend that you arrive at Newport around 4 to 5-ish.

There's plenty of bait around but no squid. Well Harry, there are some street parkings which probably would accomodate about 15 cars. There are side streets but certain ones require a permit for residents, so towing becomes an issue. Never, once again, never park at the Hyatt parking lot or you'll get towed. In other words, don't cross the bridge and park on the end side where the Hyatt is at. I've seen people who would practically run after tow trucks after their car gets towed. If this is your first time going to Newport, then be warned to be overwhelmed by the massive crowds.

The April 29, 2005 Providence Journal fishing report says the squid have arrived at the Goat Island causeway.

Just in case anyone needs some jigs and you find them scarce in Newport...



Lucky's bait shop in Warren, RI (my hometown) has a great selection of Yo-Zuri jigs in all colors. Don't bother with the sporting goods stores... Dick's Sporting Goods had no idea what a squid jig was.

Does anyone know how deep under the bridge to goat island and what kind bottom is like sandy or rocky? And, are there many people even it's midnight on the bridge? Do you think there is a chance to get parking space if I go there around midnight?

I just got back from Newport. (I live 30 minutes away) About 50 people were fishing off the bridge, mostly catching mackeral, but more than half of them were trying for squid.



I didn't catch any squid tonight. There was one Vietnamese man that had caught at least a dozen. I was there from 6-8pm and the good spots were pretty much taken. ( 3/4 close to the land on the goat island causeway.)



I'll try back next week.

My friend and I went tonight, I just got back and cleaned up and showered. Anyway, between the 2 of us, we filled my 10 gallon bucket. We must have had about 10-15 pounds of squid, some of them pretty big. We caught them all between 9 and 10 pm. It was a good night. We packed up and left not because of the lack of squid, but because we already caught more than we needed.



Oh, there were a decent number of people on the bridge tonight, but there were lots more last Sunday when I went to try but couldn't park anywhere. One other thing, when we first got there people were catching mackerel left and right.

I was planning to go to Newport for squid fishing on Friday nite..but..I just found that it will be rain from Friday all the way thru Sunday...

Would there still a lot of people fishing on the Causeway even it rains??

Please let me know if my effort to get down there would worth..'cause I would be driving almost 4 hours..
